What determines the price of a solar installation

The final cost of a photovoltaic installation on a house mainly depends on these factors:

• Number of panels needed: each panel has a fixed installed price, so the total cost depends directly on how many complete panels your roof needs.
• Component quality: premium panels and microinverters, such as SunPower and Enphase, cost more upfront but also deliver higher performance and longer warranties.
• Roof complexity: roof type, tilt, shading and accessibility all affect the labour required.
• Whether a battery is included: adding storage increases the initial investment, but lets you use 100% of the energy you generate.
• Geographic area: installation cost varies slightly by province and how accessible the house is.

Why the price of the panels isn't the whole budget

When someone asks "how much do solar panels cost?", what they're really asking is the price of the whole installation, not just the panels. A full quote also includes the microinverters (which convert the energy your panels produce into what your house uses), the mounting structure and electrical materials, the labour of a qualified team, and the legalisation of the installation. When comparing quotes between installers, check what's actually included in each one — a lower price sometimes means one of these has been cut.
